June 20th General Meeting

New Apple Developments from WWDC

Whatever is Apple up to now?

Apple’s WWDC is the Big Event of the year for software developers. In the past, tickets were on a first-come first-serve basis and they sold out in less than a minute. Now they are made available through a lottery, and you know how well that works…

The WWDC is where Apple shows us where they are going with their operating systems, computer languages, software tools, and hardware. These developments shape what developers can do and open new vistas for software development. The things shown here will drive the apps and software that users will be working with in the coming year.

If the past is any guide, we can expect Apple to announce new versions of iOS and OS X along with possibly announcing exciting new hardware. But the WWDC is “like a box of chocolates – you never know what you’re going to get”, though we can be sure that the news will give us a tempting glimpse at the software and hardware we’ll be lusting over in the coming year. {And if you’re someone who gets excited by discussions of programming language nuances, then the WWDC will leave you breathless and itching to do some coding.}

Warren James will be attending the WWDC remotely – spending the week glued to his monitor watching live streaming videos from the various conference sessions. He will report about Apple’s news and announcements and will tell us – within the constraints of Apple’s NDAs (non-disclosure agreements) – what we can expect in the way of new software and hardware in the coming year.
