September 21st General Meeting

STOP

Help Keeping Bad People/Stuff Out of Your Apple EcoSystem

Protecting yourself with content and malware blockers

Mac OS and iOS have long been touted as being almost totally free from malware, etc., and very hard to attack. This has been generally true, but in the last six months or so, this has been changing quickly, and it is now time to be more proactive and take further preventive measures!

This will cover prevention, including manual, semi-automated, and automated approaches for browsers and apps.

Why focus on browsers? They are the most-used applications and take you to Web sites and pages which try to do things like show adware, track your device and/or location, write code, cookies, etc. (including malware) back to your device. Sometimes this is all harmless, but it does slow down Web access, use up your storage space, and increase your bandwidth usage. Getting rid of much of this is good and safer.

Audience questions & participation are strongly encouraged.

Lake Ave. (between Union St. and Colorado Blvd., at the southwest corner of Union and Lake).

Who are you and what do you do?

At The Sweet Setup:

Every week we try to post a new interview with someone about what software they use on their Mac, iPhone, or iPad. We do these interviews because not only are they fun, but a glimpse into what tools someone uses and how they use those tools can spark our imagination and give us an idea or insight into how we can do things better.

Today’s victim, er, interviewee:

Heya, my name is Richard Diaz. I’m a 25-year-old medicine student from the Dominican Republic, studying at the Santo Domingo Independent University (or UASD in Spanish) and living in the Dominican Republic.

I started college as soon as I concluded high school, but, in all honesty, I wasn’t truly ready for it and started off studying something else. Thankfully, after just a couple of months I figured what I really wanted to do, and now I’m focusing on getting my degree and then taking the USMLE (United States Medical License Examination) to be able to come practice in the US.

I’ve always felt attracted to technology ever since my first computer interaction at the age of 8, and have continued to look for ways that technology can enhance my daily life. I’m a firm believer that you should think of your needs first and then find the technology that best serves them.

You can catch Richard’s complete story here: Richard Diaz’ Mac and iOS setup.

“Back issues” can be found here: Sweet Setup Interviews.

Zach Epstein has been busy! There are now three of his posts on BGR on iOS 9 features. You must see them:

9 awesome iPhone apps

Zach Epstein, over on BGR, has a bad habit of posting lists of cool iPhone/iPad(/iPod Touch)(/Apple Watch) apps that are temporarily free.

Here’s the fine print:

These are paid iPhone and iPad apps that have been made available for free for a limited time by their developers. There is no way to tell how long they will be free. These sales could end an hour from now or a week from now – obviously, the only thing we can guarantee is that they were free at the time this post was written. If you click on a link and see a price listed next to an app instead of the word “get”, it is no longer free. The sale has ended. If you download the app, you will be charged.

Did You Know?

new iPads
Graphic from the article

iOS 9 has been unleashed! My iPhone and iPod Touch would be more than happy to commence updating, if I let them, but since everyone else in the world is probably doing it, I think I’ll just wait for a bit.

And while I’m waiting, I’m going to peruse Andrew Cunningham’s review on Infinite Loop. As usual, it’s quite extensive and he’s not shy about pointing out bad or missing features. PYBT: iOS 9, thoroughly reviewed
