04 IDG: Artificial Intelligence: Big Data, Robots and the Future

The idea of Artificial Intelligence has been around since the Ancient Greeks – Pygmalion’s ivory statue was given life by Aphrodite, and Europa was protected by Zeus’ bronze man, Talos – but the term itself wasn’t actually coined until 1955. In the 60 years since John McCarthy first defined the term, we’ve gone from theory to reality, with AI being used in industries around the world. So what’s next? This week we look at whether 2014 is “the year” for AI, the potential AI has in Big Data, and how AI and robotics are transforming industry.

12 Quotes: Making mistakes

After all these years, I am still involved in the process of self-discovery. It’s better to explore life and make mistakes than to play it safe. Mistakes are part of the dues one pays for a full life.
– Sophia Loren

Know when to tune out. If you listen to too much advice, you may wind up making other people’s mistakes.
– Ann Landers

If I ran a school, I’d give the average grade to the ones who gave me all the right answers, for being good parrots. I’d give the top grades to those who made a lot of mistakes and told me about them, and then told me what they learned from them.
– R. Buckminster Fuller
