For those considering using Apple’s new iTunes rental service you should read Chris Breen’s article “Extending iTunes rental times”

When I heard that they were doing only a 24 hr window for the rental, I said it was to short for the very reason mentioned in the article –
“Last week my colleague, Rob Griffiths, noted that the 24-hour rental period for iTunes movies just wasn’t long enough for many parents. Get the kids to bed by 9:00, start watching the movie, fall asleep in front of the TV at 10:00 and by the time 9:00 PM rolls around again, the movie’s expired.”
The article explains an undocumented feature for extending viewing to finish watching the movie.
