7 awesome iPhone apps

Zach Epstein, over on BGR, has a bad habit of posting lists of cool iPhone/iPad(/iPod Touch) apps that are temporarily free.

Here’s the fine print:

These are paid iPhone and iPad apps that have been made available for free for a limited time by their developers. There is no way to tell how long they will be free. These sales could end an hour from now or a week from now – obviously, the only thing we can guarantee is that they were free at the time this post was written. If you click on a link and see a price listed next to an app instead of the word “get”, it is no longer free. The sale has ended. If you download the app, you will be charged.

Who are you and what do you do?

At The Sweet Setup:

Every week we try to post a new interview with someone about what software they use on their Mac, iPhone, or iPad. We do these interviews because not only are they fun, but a glimpse into what tools someone uses and how they use those tools can spark our imagination and give us an idea or insight into how we can do things better.

Today’s victim, er, interviewee:

I am Thomas Mathoi, a native Tyrolean now living in the beautiful city of Graz in Styria, together with my wonderful wife, our two children, and our Labrador, Cody. My main focus at work is helping run construction projects as a freelance project manager. Four years ago I founded iPROT.info as a side-project, together with four colleagues. iPROT is Web-based software for easily writing and distributing meeting minutes. You can find me on Twitter and on my Web site.

You can catch Thomas’ complete story here: Thomas Mathoi’s Mac and iPhone setup.

“Back issues” can be found here: Sweet Setup Interviews.

Apple (Un)Music(alness)

Caught an interesting post on TidBITS this morning:

Josh Centers notes that Jim Dalrymple had the worst experience with Apple Music:

…when he disabled Apple Music, it took 4,700 of his songs with it. “I trusted my data to Apple and they failed. I also failed by not backing up my library before installing Apple Music. I will not make either of those mistakes again,” Dalrymple said.

Hacking Is Everywhere

:::sigh:::

Hackers can now take over automobiles.

Aamna Mohdin posted a rather frightening piece on IFLScience the other day. It starts:

Andy Greenberg was driving his car in St. Louis when he lost control of his vehicle. The air conditioning, the radio and windshield wipers all suddenly turned on, then the engine cut off. Greenberg tried to take back control of the car, but he couldn’t. It had been hacked.

Turns out Mr Greenberg has asked a couple of security researchers to see what they could come up with in the way of remote hacking his Jeep Cherokee. PYBT for further excitement: Cyber Security Experts Hacked Into A MOVING CAR And Took Control.

This morning, CBS News posted a video: recall: 1.4 million cars in danger of possible takeovers.

Apple Is Thriving!

Apple sees growing Mac shipments in 2015, Aaron Lee and Joseph Tsai tell us:

Apple has revealed it shipped 4.8 million Mac products in its fiscal third-quarter 2015 (ended June 27, 2015), up 5% sequentially and 9% from the same period a year ago. Sources from Apple’s upstream supply chain noted that their orders for Mac products for the second half are stable and the overall volume is expected to surpass that of the first half.

Had You Heard?

Be very, very careful about what buttons you push, when and where, on your devices.

As an Ohio business exec ruefully discovered, Butt dialers beware: If you don’t lock your phone, it’s OK to eavesdrop:

The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled that if you accidentally call someone and don’t take reasonable steps to prevent it, you don’t have an expectation of privacy if that person listens in.

Are you going to argue with the Sixth Circuit Court?

Cyrus Farivar posted a very interesting article on ArsTechnica; you’ve been warned.

10 hidden tricks that could completely change the way you use your iPhone

iPhone

Zach Epstein strikes again! His current iPhone, et al, tips-and-tricks article on BGR starts here:

If Apple included a paper user manual with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus that included explanations of each and every feature, it would be the size of a phone book. The iOS platform simply packs too many features to cover them all at once, but that’s one of the great things about it. Even if you’ve been an iPhone user for years, there are still hidden features that are waiting to be discovered.

and just keeps going! PYBT: 10 hidden tricks that could completely change the way you use your iPhone, and enjoy the ride.
