8 awesome iPhone apps

Zach Epstein, over on BGR, has a bad habit of posting lists of cool iPhone/iPad(/iPod Touch) apps that are temporarily free.

Here’s the fine print:

These are paid iPhone and iPad apps that have been made available for free for a limited time by their developers. There is no way to tell how long they will be free. These sales could end an hour from now or a week from now – obviously, the only thing we can guarantee is that they were free at the time this post was written. If you click on a link and see a price listed next to an app instead of the word “get”, it is no longer free. The sale has ended. If you download the app, you will be charged.

Getting Less Battery Life Out of Your iPhone?

Zack Whittaker posted his take at ZDNet:

Struggling to get a full day of battery life out of your smartphone? It could be because of those pesky “free” ads, according to new research.

Although putting ads in phone and tablet apps may allow developers to off apps for free and make a few bucks in between, the researchers warn of the other “hidden” costs, including using up more mobile data and more device memory.

Satellite Imagery iPhone Wallpaper

From Zach Epstein, at BGR:

…a terrific resource for iPhone wallpapers called simply, WLPPR. You won’t find a massive collection of mobile wallpapers there, but the images you will find are free and they’re simply stunning. Perhaps the most impressive thing about them is their origin: They’re all cropped sections of actual photos of Earth and Mars captured from space by satellites.

Each image is available in three different resolutions, one for the iPhone 5, one for the iPhone 6 and a third for the iPhone 6 Plus.

They truly are gorgeous! PYBT for some samples and the link to WLPPR, the source: This beautiful free iPhone wallpaper collection is actually made from satellite imagery.

Who are you and what do you do?

At The Sweet Setup:

Every week we try to post a new interview with someone about what software they use on their Mac, iPhone, or iPad. We do these interviews because not only are they fun, but a glimpse into what tools someone uses and how they use those tools can spark our imagination and give us an idea or insight into how we can do things better.

Today’s victim, er, interviewee:

I’m a developer for McGarrah Jessee, an Austin advertising agency with some really cool clients. I’m part of a very small three-person team that handles all the front- and back-end development for digital projects that come through here. I went to school to be a graphic designer, but switched teams my senior year. Because of this, I’m able to pick up a lot of digital production work as well, which means a lot of hopping between designing and coding.

Today’s victim, er, interviewee:

I’m Kelly Tomlinson, a designer hailing from Phoenix hanging out in Kansas City the past few years. My main gig is as an experience designer at Cremalab, and sometimes I dabble in some freelance work. My other main focus is helping run Coffee & Design, a not-for-profit organization set out to connect, inspire, and grow design professionals. I’ve also organized a few Startup Weekends, and was Chapter Director of Startup Grind in Kansas City. I launched Wazoo! last year and still work with children’s museums on shaping that experience. And also, I go to brunch a lot and watch too much Netflix.

Apple’s Hidden Treasures

Some of what Apple forgot to tell you about

Hidden away within each and every copy of OS X is a number of useful programs for maintaining your Mac, solving problems that arise in the course of your computing life, and for doing cool stuff. But for reasons known only in the depths of “One Infinite Loop”, Apple chooses not to spend a lot of time telling people about these programs or explaining how to use them.

Not to worry; we’re here to do what Apple doesn’t do. Our President, Warren James, will talk about those useful jewels and show you how to use them to make your computing experience more productive and safer.

First up for discussion will be Apple’s built-in backup program, Time Machine. You’ll learn how to setup and use Time Machine so your files will always be safe from any hard drive problems that might arise. {Remember the first commandment of computing is to always have a backup. After you’ve done that, then you should backup your backup.}

Next up is Apple’s Disk Utility. This program can find and correct a number of disk-related problems and should be one of the first places you go to when you’re having such problems. You’ll learn not only what this program does but how to use it, along with some cautions about things to careful of when using it.

Also on the docket will be a discussion of a simple configuration option that you can use that will stop many of the malware attacks that are out there in the wild.

And in keeping in the spirit of “Apple’s Hidden Treasures”, be on the lookout for this month’s appleSTEMs.
