New Drawing Procedure

Prior to last month’s drawing, there was no order to which prizes were awarded when; when your ticket number was called, you went up and picked your choice.

Nowadays, the nice gentlemen running the drawing show decide the prize order and announce which prize is on the line for the upcoming number.

I prefer the current system. What do you think? Leave a comment.

Not Having Fun with Software Update This Weekend?

Welcome to the club…

As Nick Mediati noted on Macworld this morning:

If you were tried to install OS X software updates this weekend, you might have noticed that you…can’t. As MacRumors points out, OS X users who attempt to install software updates through the App Store app are getting error messages that complain about an invalid certificate. The reason? Apple apparently forgot to renew the SSL certificate in question.

Ooops!!

Nick continues with some explanation and an alternate if you *really* need to get those updates downloaded and installed: Apple neglects to renew SSL certificate, breaks Software Update in the process.

Wired Ranks the Rumors

As Christina Bonnington reports in Wired:

Each week, there are dozens of rumors, reports, and patent filings that hint at what’s coming out of Cupertino next. Some are legit, but many are totally bogus. As always, we’ve parsed the rumors, ranking them in order from “utterly ridiculous” to “duh, of course”. First up…

DON’T COUNT ON IT: Apple to Use NFC for the Backbone of Its Payment System

It, of course, gets better from there. PYBT: This Week’s Apple Rumors, Ranked From Dumbest to Most Plausible for all the juicy tidbits.

Who are you and what do you do?

At The Sweet Setup:

Every week we try to post a new interview with someone about what software they use on their Mac, iPhone, or iPad. We do these interviews because not only are they fun, but a glimpse into what tools someone uses and how they use those tools can spark our imagination and give us an idea or insight into how we can do things better.

Today’s victim, er, interviewee:

I’m Jason Snell. I’m the editorial director at IDG Consumer, so I manage the editorial group that runs Macworld, PCWorld, TechHive, and Greenbot. In my spare time I also do The Incomparable, a weekly podcast about geeky pop culture that has somehow turned into a podcast network of its own.

I live in Mill Valley, California, with my wife and two kids. We’re just north of the Golden Gate Bridge. The house (which we’ve had since 1999) is small, but you can’t beat the location.

You can catch Jason’s complete story here: Jason Snell’s sweet setup.

“Back issues” can be found here: Sweet Setup Interview.

Were You at the Meeting Last Night?

If not, you missed a lot of interesting tidbits, both in Apps & Traps and the presentation.

At Coco’s, we visited Australia, (North) Las Vegas, and Nellis AFB; sampled french fries from The Oinkster (in Eagle Rock) and sriracha; and discussed economics, Newtons, and auto racing. Whew!!

That’s my story; I’m sticking to it!
