InfoManager for Monday, May 19th, 2014

After we started bouncing for posts over 17K, we trimmed the InfoManager back to less than 17K (a couple of years ago).

Now, InfoManager bounced because it was over 12K.

So, here’s a verion under 12K that hopefully will not bounce:

An iTunes Update Broke What?!!??

Did you upgrade Mavericks to 10.9.3 the other day? You may or may not have noticed a “little” bug, introduced by iTunes 11.2:

Thursday’s iTunes 11.2 release contained a bug that was both inconvenient and risky: If you have Find My Mac enabled, your Users folder (/Users) will be hidden at startup. Worse, that folder, along with /Users/Shared, will have their permissions set so that anyone can modify them, creating a security risk.

Better Safe Than Sorry

(Relatively) new to computers and the Internet? Don’t sweat it; we all were, at some point. Fortunately, there are a lot of hints and tips out there to help us all out.

Ryan Dube posted a *great* mini-guide on MakeUseOf, detailing some of the most common trip-ups and how to deal with them. PYBT: 5 Ways You’re Using The Web Wrong: Avoid Frustration & Embarrassment.

Google’s at It Again

Mark O’Neill reported on MakeUseOf this morning:

Google has just updated their terms of service allowing them to use your Google profile information in their ads. Which is worrying, because who really reads terms and conditions?

If you, like most everybody, would rather not appear in Google ads willy nilly, PYBT: Google Will Use Your Profile Information In Their Ads – Unless You Opt Out.

Wired Ranks the Rumors

As Christina Bonnington reports in Wired:

Each week, there are dozens of rumors, reports, and patent filings that hint at what’s coming out of Cupertino next. Some are legit, but many are totally bogus. As always, we’ve parsed the rumors, ranking them in order from “utterly ridiculous” to “duh, of course”. First up…

DON’T COUNT ON IT: “iPhone 6” Photos Galore

It, of course, gets better from there. PYBT: This Week’s Apple Rumors, Ranked From Dumbest to Most Plausible for all the juicy tidbits.

Who are you and what do you do?

At The Sweet Setup:

Every week we try to post a new interview with someone about what software they use on their Mac, iPhone, or iPad. We do these interviews because not only are they fun, but a glimpse into what tools someone uses and how they use those tools can spark our imagination and give us an idea or insight into how we can do things better.

Today’s victim, er, interviewee:

I’m David Chartier and I am a Content Strategist and Writer. I run marketing and PR for AgileBits (makers of 1Password and Knox) and a few clients. I also run Finer Things in Tech and got my start in the industry as a blogger for TUAW, then an Associate Editor at Ars Technica and Macworld. I freelance occasionally for Macworld, The Mac Observer, and The Wirecutter.

Editor’s note: David was kind enough to provide us with his Mac, iPhone, and iPad setups. To keep it all straight, we’ve deviated a bit from the normal format, but everything is labeled so you can enjoy the read.

You can catch David’s complete story here: David Chartier’s sweet setup.

“Back issues” can be found here: Sweet Setup Interview.
