New Apple Gear

The announcement of a new personal computer is rarely a big deal. In most cases, new laptops are perhaps a little faster, a little lighter and have a tad more battery life than their predecessor. But the three new PCs that Apple announced on Tuesday – two laptops and a desktop – are using a new Apple-designed chip that the company is billing as a game-changer.

Review units are not yet available and unlike pre-pandemic Apple events, journalists were not at the announcement in-person, so I haven’t seen or touched the new machines, but they’re worthy of a column both from a business and technology perspective.…

So reports Larry Magid, in The Merc, today. Adding the business perspective makes it really interesting.

For the whole deal, PYBT: Larry Magid: Apple ushers in a new era for the Mac.

Were You at the Meeting Last Night?

If not, you missed out on some interesting hints on Apple homes, and just how splendidly iPhone 12s mesh and meld into that.

At the Meeting after the Meeting, it was all about getting older versions of MacOS, a bit of politics, old/no longer available e-mail addresses, AppleLink Personal Edition, CompuServe, SCSI drives, 5G cellular issues, Netflix & Disney, Hogan’s Heroes. Seriously! Would I lie about a thing like that?

That’s my story; I’m sticking to it!

Who Are You and What Do You Do?

At The Sweet Setup:

In this series, we post a new interview with someone about what software they use on their Mac, iPhone, or iPad. We do these interviews because not only are they fun, but a glimpse into what tools someone uses and how they use those tools can spark our imagination and give us an idea or insight into how we can do things better.

Today’s victim, er, interviewee:

My name is Nate Dunn, and I run my cycling coaching company Data Driven Athlete from my home in Sacramento, CA. The sport of cycling has a long relationship with technology. In the last few decades, this relationship has been primarily mediated by the power meter.

A power meter is a device embedded in a bicycle crank that measures your power output (in watts) then transmits this data stream to a small computer on your handlebar.

Your power output is different from other classic cycling metrics (like speed or HR) in that it serves as an objective measurement of exactly how hard you’re riding, regardless of environmental factors like wind or terrain.

If you combine a cyclist’s power output with other metrics like heart rate, speed, and cadence (revolutions per minute), you can effectively turn a bike into a mobile exercise physiology lab. It’s truly amazing stuff.

All of this data gets pushed to various cloud-based training platforms enabling a coach to remotely analyze, offer feedback, and ultimately design a custom training program to support a cyclist in reaching their goals. That’s my job in a nutshell.

You can catch Nate’s complete story here: Nate Dunn’s Mac and iOS Setup.

“Back issues” can be found here: Sweet Setup Interviews.

If not, you joined us in missing Apps & Traps (Dave’s schedule whacked him over the head) and another fascinating presentation. Who knew there was so much, from so many, to know about Zoom?

At the Meeting after the Meeting, we dwelt on Apple stores open (or not…), new Apple products, updating iDevices, and spam messages in Chrome.

That’s my story; I’m sticking to it!

Had You Heard?

iPhone 12 is coming! I’m certain y’all have heard plenty about all the new features and capabilities. David Goldman, at CNN, brought up an interesting point:

The new iPhone 12 is probably going to have the expected upgrades: a faster processor, the latest iOS software, 5G wireless connectivity and a host of other updates that should make the iPhone 12 the fastest smartphone Apple ever produced.

But more than any other new bell or whistle, one new feature could make the iPhone 12 feel significantly zippier: A high-refresh-rate screen.

Nope! Never would have contemplated that one!

PYBT for the whole story: The killer feature that could make the iPhone 12 feel much, much faster.

Did You Know?

Every now and again, you might need to know the resolution of your Mac’s screen(s). As Benj Edwards makes note, on How-To Geek:

The resolution (in pixels by pixels) of your Mac’s display determines how much information you can fit on screen and how sharp the image is, so it’s important to know. If you run a full-screen game or application at native resolution, the image will look its best, so here’s how to find out what it is.

How to Find Your Mac’s Screen Resolution has all the gory details.
