December 19th General Meeting

Holiday Party

Top o’ the season to ye!

The holidays are almost upon us and that means it’s time for Apple users to get together to share some holiday spirit and talk about our favorite computers, phones, and tablets. Plus, you’ll have a chance to win a shiny new Apple TV to add to your holiday gift collection.

Join us on Monday, December 19th, for our last meeting of 2016. We’ll spend some time talking about new Apple hardware and software, we’ll warn you about new insecurities in a popular piece of software, we’ll share info about apps to delight scientific types and you’ll get some tips and be warned of some traps. Plus, we’re going to have a holiday party with all the things you’d expect – cookies, egg nog, and other delights – along with a special present for all our members who’ve paid up for 2017.  And on top of that, we’ll be having an expanded Holiday-sized drawing and a special drawing for an Apple TV.

Sounds like a lot of fun so don’t miss it.  We’re looking forward to seeing you at our holiday party.

So have a Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, Joyous Kwanzaa, and a celebratory Solstice.

Were You at the Meeting Last Night?

If not, you’ll have a lot fewer temptations when you go Christmas shopping.

At Du-Par’s, the various Star Treks, Yiddish, Harlan Ellison’s novel, missions to Mars, Voyager, and the DSN came up.

That’s my story; I’m sticking to it!

Who are you and what do you do

At The Sweet Setup:

Every week we try to post a new interview with someone about what software they use on their Mac, iPhone, or iPad. We do these interviews because not only are they fun, but a glimpse into what tools someone uses and how they use those tools can spark our imagination and give us an idea or insight into how we can do things better.

Today’s victim, er, interviewee:

I’m Jeffrey Shih, an Emergency Room Physician and lecturer in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto with a specialized interest in Emergency Ultrasound. The use of ultrasound allows me to visualize and diagnose diseases right at the bedside, thus providing a higher quality of care to my patients.

I’m also the Program Director of an Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship Training Program for Emergency Physicians and recently published a book, Ultrasound for the Win! Emergency Medicine Cases.

You can catch Jeffrey’s complete story here: Jeffrey Shih’s Mac and iPhone setup.

Bumper Snickers

In my blog, I have a recurring post title, Bumper Snicker. It started out as snapshots of amusing bumper stickers spotted whilst I was out and about. It wasn’t long before it included license plate frames and license plates, themselves. There may even be some window decorations.

As Dave so readily proves in every edition of Apps & Traps, the tech world is a veritable Niagra Falls of humor and hysteria, so I thought it might be fun to post funny/silly/hysterical stuff that I come across. Since non-tech stuff can be pretty knee-slapping, too, that will also make appearances. Here goes!

Got an e-mail from amazon.com this morning, featuring “Woot, the wildest, cheapest corner of the Amazon world”. Not having associated the word woot with Amazon previously, I took a look and got no further than the title bar: woot! Deals & Shenanigans

You’ve been warned…

SGVAUG and I have no connection whatever with Amazon. Neither are we shilling for them here.

I am Jordan Fourcher, student and tech wizard for my school.

Did You Know?

Just in time for Hallowee’n…

In his post, Google Gets Creepier, David Sparks brings up (via ProPublica, by way of Daring Fireball) recent changes in Google’s terms of service (have you read them lately?):

…Traditionally, Google has kept web-browsing information segregated from your personally identifiable information. Not anymore.…

Not surprised, are we?? Head on over to MacSparky and check it out.

Were You at the Meeting Last Night?

If not, you missed a lot of really cool iOS and MacOS tips and tricks, and your golden ticket was not drawn.

At Coco’s, we touched on exploding galaxies, 3D printing, serving temperatures of wine, and upscale restaurants. Restaurants of various scale in the general vicinity also came up.

That’s my story; I’m sticking to it!
