iOS 16 Tricks

“Apple’s iOS 16 update changed your iPhone. Here’s how to change it back, make it better and do more.”

So tells us Heather Kelly, on The Washington Post:

Lurking inside every major smartphone update are a mix of changes we like, changes we don’t and features we don’t even know are there yet. Apple’s iOS 16 update for iPhones came out last week, and behind the flashier updates like editable messages is a whole list of subtle tweaks.

These big Apple updates always add in new settings and ways to customize your devices. On iPhones, that can mean introducing clutter and confusion, or just challenging creatures of habit who don’t like it when buttons move around (hello). Let us guide you through your phone’s new look, including that bigger clock.

I definitely need figure out some changes!

Getting Text Out of Photos!!

Apple posted a great article on how to get text out of photos and images in iOS 15 and iPadOS 15:

With iOS 15 and later or iPadOS 15.1 and later, you can use Live Text to copy text in photos, translate languages, make a call, and more.

Live Text recognizes information within your photos and online images, so you can make a call, send an email, or look up directions with a tap. You can also use Live Text in the Camera app or when using Camera in apps like Notes or Reminders — point your camera at a photo or image with text, then tap the Live Text button…

For the whole deal, PYTB: Copy and translate text from photos on your iPhone or iPad.

Thanks to Bob Langdon for the tip.

Were You at the Meeting Last Night?

It was a wild and crazy discussion/Q&A! Wow!!

The Meeting after the Meeting involved doom of Disney, Apple hating, 1Password issues, issues when a spouse/partner passes away, myth-izing, Mac talk shows, hybrid (online and live combined) meetings, getting to Di-No, stopping by Joshua Tree, lots of TV, and cursing on HomePod.

That’s my story; I’m sticking to it!

Far Out!!!

Apple’s releasing the iPhone 14, from Jeff Butts, on MacObserver:

The speculation is over, and the date is official. Apple will announce the iPhone 14 and, presumably, the Apple Watch Series 8 on Sept. 7. In an event dubbed “Far Out,” the Cupertino-based tech giant will also host its first in-person iPhone event since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Apple’s next media event will be primarily focused on the new iPhone 14. Sure, Apple’s liable to announce at least one other product launch then, but its smartphone is always the headliner for these early fall events. Cupertino announced the “Far Out” event will take place Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 10 a.m. Pacific time. Here’s how that works out for several other cities throughout the world.

Apple Fixes Security Vulnerabilities

Jeff Butts reports, on MacObserver, Apple security updates for iOS, iPadOS, and MacOS Ventura:

Apple released updates for iOS, iPadOS and macOS Monterey on Wednesday. Bringing the operating systems to iOS 15.6.1, iPadOS 15.6.1 and macOS Monterey 12.5.1, the new versions include mainly bug fixes along with some urgent security updates.

According to the release notes, the latest update mainly includes several bug fixes. However, there are also two zero-day exploits the Cupertino-based company says are addressed in iOS and iPadOS 15.6.1.

PYBT for the complete report: Apple Fixes Zero-Day Security Vulnerabilities with iOS and iPadOS 15.6.1, MacOS Monterey 12.5.1.

Who Are You and What Do You Do?

At The Sweet Setup:

In this series, we post a new interview with someone about what software they use on their Mac, iPhone, or iPad. We do these interviews because not only are they fun, but a glimpse into what tools someone uses and how they use those tools can spark our imagination and give us an idea or insight into how we can do things better.

Today’s victim, er, interviewee:

I have loved slowly fidgeting with my iPhone Home Screen, especially with the new updates to iOS over the years.

But I think it’s time for a total revamp. My Lock Screen image has been the same for at least five years. Some of my apps have been in the same place since I got my first iPhone, almost 10 years ago. So, I decided it was time to change it up.

When I sat down to think about what I wanted my iPhone to accomplish for me, it was easier to figure out what changes I wanted to make. I see my iPhone as a tool. A tool for connection and communication. A tool that also sometimes needs some limits so my screen time summary doesn’t tell me I could have gotten a part-time job with the time I spent on my phone.
