Who are you and what do you do?

At The Sweet Setup:

Every week we try to post a new interview with someone about what software they use on their Mac, iPhone, or iPad. We do these interviews because not only are they fun, but a glimpse into what tools someone uses and how they use those tools can spark our imagination and give us an idea or insight into how we can do things better.

Today’s victim, er, interviewee:

My name is Brad Dowdy, and I am a pen addict. By day, I write pen reviews at The Pen Addict and make pen cases at Nock Co with my partner, Jeffrey Bruckwicki. By night, I am a UNIX admin at a datacenter. All of the other hours I am a husband and father. There is sleep in there somewhere, too. Maybe.

Did You Know?

Do ya wanna know which iPad might be the right one for you?

Eugene Kim posted an interesting (more for the review links and comparison table than anything else) article on PCMag this morning. I like the disclaimer:

Just a quick note: This story is not about the heated Apple-versus-Android debate that’s sure to rage on in the comments section below. Android tablets have grown in numbers and quality, but the majority of casual tablet users will ultimately be better served by Apple’s iPad and iOS ecosystem.

Here’s the link for the whole thing: Which iPad Should I Buy?

BTW, pay no mind to the comments section, populated primarily by fools of the Samsung-fanboy variety who didn’t bother to read the disclaimer…

More on iCloud Security & the “Breach”

First off, here’s a link to the post on the Apple Web site: Apple update on iCloud.com security.

Next, Sean Gallagher, on Ars Technica, posted a great user-friendly summary of a piece on greatfire.org, which tells us this issue with iCloud is coming from the Chinese government:

GreatFire.org, a group that monitors censorship by the Chinese government’s national firewall system (often referred to as the “Great Firewall”), reports that China is using the system as part of a man-in-the-middle (MITM) attack on users of Apple’s iCloud service within the country. The attacks come as Apple begins the official rollout of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus on the Chinese mainland.

The attack, which uses a fake certificate and Domain Name Service address for the iCloud service, is affecting users nationwide in China. The GreatFire.org team speculates that the attack is an effort to help the government circumvent the improved security features of the new phones by compromising their iCloud credentials and allowing the government to gain access to cloud-stored content such as phone backups.

The complete piece is here: Chinese government launches man-in-middle attack against iCloud [Updated].

Meanwhile, over at greatfire.org, in China collecting Apple iCloud data; attack coincides with launch of new iPhone, percy gets into a lot of technical detail and explanation, complete with sources. Interesting read.

iCloud Security Warning from Apple

Salient points from the article on the San Jose Mercury News:

“We’re aware of intermittent organized network attacks using insecure certificates to obtain user information, and we take this very seriously,” the computer-maker said in a post Tuesday on its support website. The post said Apple’s own servers have not been compromised.

and

Apple, which is based in Cupertino, California, said in its post that the attacks have not affected users who sign into iCloud from their iPhones or iPads, or on Mac computers while using the latest Mac operating system and Apple’s Safari browser. But the company suggested users should verify they are connecting to a legitimate iCloud server by using the security features built into Safari and other browsers such as Firefox and Google’s Chrome. The browsers will show a message that warns users when they are connecting to a site that doesn’t have a digital certificate verifying that it is authentic.

“If users get an invalid certificate warning in their browser while visiting www.icloud.com, they should pay attention to the warning and not proceed,” Apple said in the post.

PYBT: Apple issues security warning for iCloud for the whole story.
