Who are you and what do you do?

At The Sweet Setup:

Every week we try to post a new interview with someone about what software they use on their Mac, iPhone, or iPad. We do these interviews because not only are they fun, but a glimpse into what tools someone uses and how they use those tools can spark our imagination and give us an idea or insight into how we can do things better.

Today’s victim, er, interviewee:

I’m Andrew Franciosa, an Upstate New York based photographer. I recently left a large studio in the area where I was the production manager and went independent to start my own studio. I mainly do wedding photography and commerical work.

With Andrew Franciosa Studio, I now have control over every piece of the process, which is important for me. I was initially introduced to the idea of considering the entire customer experience from working for Apple retail for four years, and I have been obsessed with it since. Items like contracts and payments are handled via the web. This makes things easier (Marco brand voice: eliminates onboarding friction), which is an important thing for clients who are already stressed about planning their wedding. And for commercial clients, it’s great because I can get paid faster and online contracts are easy to review, read and archive.

The studio is currently in the north-facing side of my apartment, a converted upholstry warehouse and factory from the early 1900s.

Tech Hits the Kitchen

(but in a good way!!)

For those of us whose recipe collections are digitized, Matt Smith posted a wonderful collection (on MakeUseOf, this morning) of stands, protectors, and other nifty gadgets to help integrate iPads into the kitchen and cooking routine. Here’s his conclusion:

These devices won’t make you a great chef, of course, but they will help you on your journey towards culinary perfection – or acceptance – as the case may be. With your iPad in the kitchen, and these accessories, you’ll have no shortage of access to the Web’s finest cooking resources, all accessible without worry that you’ll damage your tablet.

iOS 7 Security Flaw

It lives in MobileSafari and affects, among other things, how PDF files are handled; this was fixed in iOS 8.

Robert Lemos posted on ArsTechnica this morning: Can’t upgrade to iOS 8? Beware bugs in the system.

However, it’s probably not a total disaster, as one of the security experts quoted in the article states:

…“So it might be that this vulnerability alone, may not be enough to infect the phone with malware, unless you combine it with other exploits,” Hirvonen said.…

Don’t Upgrade to iOS 8 from iOS 7…

…until you’re sure it’s time; you won’t be able to get back.

From AppleInsider this afternoon:

After rolling out two point updates for iOS 8 earlier this week, Apple on Friday stopped signing iOS 7.1.2 firmware, meaning users who migrated to the new mobile operating system no longer have the option of downgrading.

For the whole story, PYBT: Apple stops iOS 7.1.2 code signing, restricts downgrading from iOS 8

“Bendgate” Worse for Others

You’ve heard of “BendGate”, right? (the big hullabaloo from some of Apple’s competitors over the “fatal” bendability of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus)

Well, it would seem that those competitors’ efforts to capitalize on the rather questionable YouTube video seem to have backfired. Daniel Eran Dilger posted a rather pointed piece on AppleInsider this morning to that effect; PYBT: After Apple Inc. dodged the iPhone 6 Plus BendGate bullet, detractors wounded by ricochet.

Wired Ranks the Rumors

As Christina Bonnington reports in Wired:

Each week, there are dozens of rumors, reports, and patent filings that hint at what’s coming out of Cupertino next. Some are legit, but many are totally bogus. As always, we’ve parsed the rumors, ranking them in order from “utterly ridiculous” to “duh, of course”. First up…
