New to iOS?

Welcome to our club!! Moving over from Android? Has Christina Bonnington, at Wired, got the deal for you:

Now that Apple’s got its bigger, better iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, we suspect oodles of big-screen Android aficionados may defect to iOS. (Apparently Apple thinks so too). But while switching phones is one type of headache, switching phones and switching operating systems can induce migraine-level pains if you’re not properly prepared.

But you will be prepared. From your can’t-miss calendar events to your favorite apps, here’s how to make sure your most important mobile needs make the transition from Android to iOS as smoothly as possible.

Christina has some great advice; not so much for some of those commenters… PYBT: How to Ditch Android and Join the Apple Side.

New iOS!

new iPads

So, you just downloaded iOS 8. Looks pretty familiar, right? Certainly, last year’s switch from iOS 6 to iOS 7 – which saw Apple ditch the iPhone’s tired, six-year-old interface and move to something more spare and clean – was a far bigger leap visually than this update to iOS 8.

In fact, most of the apps in iOS 8 look almost identical to what you were using just days ago. And a few of them appear entirely unchanged. But there are new functions, new tricks, and time-savers hidden in these new iOS 8 versions of your favorite apps. Some of them you’ll see right away. But the rest… well, let us show you.

Thus begins Michael Calore’s delve into lots-of-things iOS 8. If you haven’t upgraded yet, you might want to take a look and see if anything helps push you along that path, or convinces you to hold off just a bit.

The Second Mac Commandment Returns

Mind you, it also pertains to iDevices (which should come as no big surprise).

In How to back up your iPhone and iPad before an upgrade, Chris Gonzales gets into a lot of gory details, including security and restoring from your backups.

The best part of the article is a quote from Merlin Mann: ‘If you don’t have time to do backups, you so don’t have time to upgrade.’ Bring on the dragons!

Apple’s Got Your Back

Apple has updated its privacy policy as part of the rollout of iOS 8, announcing that devices with the latest version of the operating system installed can no longer be accessed by the company itself.

Previously, as we reported in May 2014, if law enforcement came to Apple with a seized device and a valid warrant, it was able to access a substantial portion of the data already on an iPad or iPhone. But under the latest version of iOS, even that will be impossible.

Thus begins Cyrus Farivar’s post on Ars Technica, Apple expands data encryption under iOS 8, making handover to cops moot.

Two notable quotes from the article:

“…Apple cannot bypass your passcode and therefore cannot access this data…”
      – Apple’s Web site, last evening

“Apple’s old policy for extracting user data from iPhones for law enforcement: Come back with a warrant. Their new policy: Get lost.”

HealthKit and Health.app

And what are these?

According to Matt Smith’s article on MakeUseOf:

HealthKit is an application programming interface (API) built to help iPhone developers access and manage the user’s health and fitness. This takes the form of data like heart rate, exercise, and level of activity. Your iPhone, when paired with an Apple Watch, will be able to monitor you with surprising detail.

and

…the Health app will be available only on iPhone. This may seem strange, but Apple has restricted apps to only its phone or tablet before. The company feels Health would be of little use on the iPad because it rarely leaves home.

Matt gets into understandable detail here: iOS 8 Turns Your iPhone Into A Personal Healthcare Monitor.

It Wouldn’t Quite Be the End of the World

But neither should you be complacent about it, should it happen.

Businesses can’t seem to stop hackers looking to steal customer data. The list of companies preyed (ed.) on has grown long indeed and includes well known names like JP Morgan, Home Depot and Target. And that’s just what we know about. Every unexplained website outage is met with raised eyebrows. Was it a glitch? Was the site hacked? And when would they (tell) us if the latter was true?

Everyone seems to agree that companies should do more to protect the people who’ve entrusted them with valuable data, but the trend of high-profile hacks seems likely to continue in the near future. For now, consumers can do little but prepare and respond as threats occur. Here’s how you can protect yourself.

Matt Smith’ article on MakeUseOf continues with quite a few tips, hints, and pointers. PYBT and educate yourself: Store You Shop At Get Hacked? Here’s What To Do.
