Who are you and what do you do?

At The Sweet Setup:

Every week we try to post a new interview with someone about what software they use on their Mac, iPhone, or iPad. We do these interviews because not only are they fun, but a glimpse into what tools someone uses and how they use those tools can spark our imagination and give us an idea or insight into how we can do things better.

Today’s victim, er, interviewee:

My name is Jamelle Bouie, and I am a staff writer for Slate magazine. I cover politics and policy, I do photography, and sometimes I go on TV.

You can catch Jamelle’s complete story here: Jamelle Bouie’s sweet setup.

“Back issues” can be found here: Sweet Setup Interviews.

Apple’s Privacy Statement

A message from Tim Cook about Apple’s commitment to your privacy.

At Apple, your trust means everything to us. That’s why we respect your privacy and protect it with strong encryption, plus strict policies that govern how all data is handled.

Security and privacy are fundamental to the design of all our hardware, software, and services, including iCloud and new services like Apple Pay. And we continue to make improvements. Worms! And not the Garden Variety…

From AppleInsider this afternoon:

Security researchers recently discovered that more than 17,000 Macs around the world have been infected by a new OS X malware threat called “iWorm,” which at one point used Reddit.com as a go-between to cull user data, perform various system actions and execute Lua scripts.

Yes, indeed, there are viruses, malware, and other not-so-nice bits and bobs out there that like to call Macs home; you really do need to be running anti-bad-stuff software on your Macs. ‘iWorm’ malware controls Macs via Reddit, more than 17K affected has the gory details, including how to tell if you’ve been invaded. Check it out; I have spoken.

Wired Ranks the Rumors

As Christina Bonnington reports in Wired:

Each week, there are dozens of rumors, reports, and patent filings that hint at what’s coming out of Cupertino next. Some are legit, but many are totally bogus. As always, we’ve parsed the rumors, ranking them in order from “utterly ridiculous” to “duh, of course”. First up…

It, of course, gets better from there. PYBT: This Week’s Apple Rumors, Ranked From Dumbest to Most Plausible for all the juicy tidbits.

More Apple Goodies!!!

new iPads

Spotted on ArsTechnica this morning:

When it rains, it pours – Apple was silent for most of 2014 before dropping iOS 8, new iPhones, and the Apple Watch announcement on us last month. Now, Re/code says the company plans to hold an iPad-centric event at its town hall campus in Cupertino on October 16. Re/code (formerly AllThingsD) has a stellar track record for predicting Apple event dates, so we’re inclined to believe them even though the event is falling on a Thursday instead of a Tuesday (as Apple events usually do).

And it happens before our October meeting, so we should have even more stuff to hear about! PYBT to Andrew Cunningham’s piece: Re/code: Apple’s iPad and OS X Yosemite-focused event happens October 16.

Did You Know?

Andrew Cunningham brought up a very interesting point on Ars Technica today: if you’re in the market for a used iDevice (I imagine you can get a really good deal on an iPhone 5(s) these days…), make sure you don’t acquire one that you can’t unlock… By the same token, if you are planning to sell an iDevice of your own, make sure you don’t make it a pain-in-the-neck process for your buyer.

Here’s what you need to know: Avoid buying locked iPhones with Apple’s Activation Lock status page.

Caveat emptor (and seller)!
