President’s Message – November 18, 2009

We are now heading full speed into the holiday season, with Thanksgiving just ahead, Chanukkah and Christmas only a few weeks away, and then New Years right around the corner. This has been a busy and productive year for the SGVMUG, with a number of very good presentations to our credit. Thank you all for your continued support of our activities. Thanks to the design efforts of Board member Scott Harrell, we now have a new brochure to promote the SGVMUG . We need to distribute these around the area to any stores, schools, “watering holes,” and other places where Mac people congregate. If you can help us by taking some brochures around to the places you visit, please let us know by sending an e-mail to: info@sgvaug.org and include the word “brochure” in the subject line. Our December 21st meeting falls just a few days before Christmas, so we will be focusing on a few more tips to help you through the remainder of the holiday season. We also will review the news and products released by Apple during 2009 and conduct a general Q&A session.A few specific presentations, carried-over from our November 16th meeting will include:- David Whitby will show us a few more “helper” applications for your Mac or iPod:- Isolator blurs and dims all background applications on your screen to emphasize the foreground and improve your concentration on the work you are doing.- Focus Booster puts a timer on the screen to help you track how much time you are spending and, more importantly, remind you when you need to take a break.- Spirited Away hides applications that are not being used after a defined amount of time.- I will show you some tips on how to use Photo Booth and iMovie to preserve and distribute your family members’ stories and reminiscences. I’ll also tell you how to fix the “mirrored-image” problem in Photo Booth.- Scott Harrell will show us some of the ways to make good use of the new generation of iPods for the holidays:- last-minute gifts of iPods, accessories, or iTunes Store gift cards- how to create a holiday video with the iPod NANO and upload it to YouTube- how to create a holiday podcastSo please plan to join us for our meeting in the Pasadena Library Auditorium on Monday, December 21st at 7:00 p.m.On behalf of the San Gabriel Valley Macintosh Users Group I would like to take this opportunity to thank two local companies that have provided significant support to our ongoing activities; Di-No Computers and MacAlly. Please show your gratitude by giving them your business during this holiday shopping season and throughout the year. There are other sellers of Apple products in the area; I will not mention their names, but by their omission it is implied that they have not agreed to support us.NOTE: Because the Library will be closed on the third Monday in January, our meeting will be one week earlier, on January 11th. Also, in order to avoid a conflict with the MacWorld expo, we will not be having a meeting in February. We will resume our regular schedule of meetings on the third Monday of each month in March.Best wishes for a safe, sane, and happy holiday season,Ron Streicher, PresidentSan Gabriel Valley Macintosh Group
