Apple Just Announced

Key Points:

  • During the WWDC 2020 keynote, Apple revealed iOS 14 with a new home screen for iPhones, iPadOS 14, macOS Big Sur, watchOS 7 and more.
  • It also said it will begin to switch to using its own Apple chips instead of Intel chips in Macs.
  • The keynote was livestreamed this year since Apple decided to hold a digital-only event in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

So sayeth Kif Leswing at CNBC. PYBT for his full report: Here’s everything Apple just announced: iOS 14 will give iPhones a new home screen, ditching Intel chips and more.

WWDC 2020

WWDC starts today. We should be hearing lots of good stuff coming from Infinite Loop!

Since WWDC is digital-only this year, I’m hoping we’ll be getting lots of online reports, videos, etc. I’ll share as much of it as I come across

Architecture

Apple CPU logos

And how did we shift from computers to architecture? Besides that my father-in-law was an architect?

We’re talking about CPU architecture here, and Apple has a bit of a history:

Over the last 36 years, the Apple Macintosh has had three different CPU architectures, and it’s poised to potentially migrate to a fourth. As rumors about a switch to ARM swirl, let’s take a brief look at the history of CPU architectures on the Mac.

In Deja Vu: A Brief History of Every Mac CPU Architecture, Benj Edwards gets into the past, present, & and future thereof.

Thanks, How-To Geek! We did need to know.

Were You at the Meeting Last Night?

If not, you missed a really neat Apple security video (courtesy of Leonard) and pretty cool Apps & Traps.

The Meeting after the Meeting is back! We didn’t go out to eat (yet), but several of us stuck around in the Zoom chat room after the General meeting and had the usual conversations! It was great!!

That’s my story; I’m sticking to it!

Had You Heard?

From Dade Hayes on Deadline this afternoon:

Major wireless providers Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T have all experienced phone outages Monday across the U.S.

None of the companies immediately acknowledged or offered an explanation for the service interruptions, but complaints proliferated online. The hardest-hit areas are the East Coast, including major cities like New York, Atlanta and Miami, as well as LA and Chicago, according to the tech issue clearinghouse DownDetector.

Calls and text messages appear to be the functions that are the most difficult for customers to use. Wi-Fi and land-line phone service is out in certain pockets of the country but is not widespread.

PYBT for the scoop: Verizon, T-Mobile And AT&T All Experience Phone Outages Across U.S..

Who Are You and What Do You Do?

At The Sweet Setup:

Every week we {aim to} post a new interview with someone about what software they use on their Mac, iPhone, or iPad. We do these interviews because not only are they fun, but a glimpse into what tools someone uses and how they use those tools can spark our imagination and give us an idea or insight into how we can do things better.

Today’s victim, er, interviewee:

My name is Jonathan Pulley, and I am a Senior Consultant for a software company specializing in data analytics, data warehousing, and business intelligence. I also dabble in photography and gaming.

You can catch Jonathan’s complete story here: Jonathan Pulley’s Mac and iPhone Setup.

“Back issues” can be found here: Sweet Setup Interviews.

T2 Explained

A couple of years ago, Apple introduced the T2 chip. It combined several formerly separate controllers, refining operations and increasing security. Check out what it does for us and our Macs here: Apple’s New T2 Chip Explained: What does it do?.

Here’s what Apple Support has to say: About the Apple T2 Security Chip.

The video is from November, 2018, but it sums things nicely.

Tim Cook Defends Apple’s Encryption Policy

On YouTube, Apple CEO Tim Cook explains Apple’s encryption and privacy policies, in a discussion with WSJ’s Editor-in-Chief Gerard Baker at the Wall Street Journal’s technology conference in Laguna Beach, Calif., in October (2015).

This was posted in February, 2016, but it is most certainly still relevant; Mr Cook brings up some very good points.
