November 16th General Meeting

Ready for Christmas/Hanukkah??

Making a list…

Christmas is coming, the geese are getting…

…ready to go to the November meeting, so they know what to put on their Christmas lists! At the top is a dreidel (of course!); the rest they’re hoping to get from the raft of presenters who will be sharing what would be on their own lists. And who knows? There might be some great ideas from folk in the audience, too.

Audience questions & participation are strongly encouraged.

Who are you and what do you do?

At The Sweet Setup:

Every week we try to post a new interview with someone about what software they use on their Mac, iPhone, or iPad. We do these interviews because not only are they fun, but a glimpse into what tools someone uses and how they use those tools can spark our imagination and give us an idea or insight into how we can do things better.

Today’s victim, er, interviewee:

I am Liam Byrnes. I’m originally from Cornwall in England, but now live with my wife Rachel (she’s from Scotland) in South Africa… right now, though, I’m writing this in Taiwan!

I work for All Nations as a volunteer and am financially supported by amazing people from the UK and US. Despite my primary role being raising and mentoring local leaders face to face, because we are a non-profit without a big administrative staff, I always spend a reasonable amount of time on my computer, as a certain someone once said, Getting Things Done!

I’m also writing a thesis for an M.A. from the University of the Nations, and in my down-time I’m writing on LiamByrnes.com, tweeting here, and Instagramming up a storm here.

Seeing as being on a computer is not my primary place of work, productivity (and the software that assists that) becomes a big deal, hence why I love The Sweet Setup – you’ll see a lot of apps I use that I’ve picked up from other interviews on here.

You can catch Liam’s complete story here: Liam Byrnes’ Mac and iPhone setup.

“Back issues” can be found here: Sweet Setup Interviews.

My name is Bobály Mihály (Bobály is the family name, we use it the other way around here in Hungary). I run a small digital agency, named after my online nickname: JabJab. We create pay-per-click campaigns and offer digital analytics services. This practically means that besides the personal meetings, I work and exist in the digital space most of my work time.

Hey there! My name is Zach Dyson. I’m a freelance Graphic Designer from Melbourne, Australia.

In my spare time I am an avid photographer (using a Canon 5D Mark II) and soon-to-be podcast host alongside my mate, Kyle Pasalskyj. We’re very close to launching “It’s a Parade” in the coming months. Our show is based on tech, design, photography and everything else that we love.

8 awesome iPhone apps

Zach Epstein, over on BGR, has a bad habit of posting lists of cool iPhone/iPad(/iPod Touch)(/Apple Watch) apps that are temporarily free.

Here’s the fine print:

These are paid iPhone and iPad apps that have been made available for free for a limited time by their developers. There is no way to tell how long they will be free. These sales could end an hour from now or a week from now – obviously, the only thing we can guarantee is that they were free at the time this post was written. If you click on a link and see a price listed next to an app instead of the word “get”, it is no longer free. The sale has ended. If you download the app, you will be charged.

Did You Know?

Today is Ada Lovelace Day!!

What??

Ada Lovelace Day is an international celebration of the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

OK. Now, who?

Ada Lovelace
Graphic from the MakeUseOf article

In How Ada Lovelace, the First Computer Programmer, Changed the World, Matthew Hughes introduces us to Ada herself:

Its [the first computer program ever published] author was Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace, more commonly known as Ada Lovelace, and the program was part of an academic article published in the 1840s. And no, that isn’t a typo.

Although Ada was an accomplished writer and mathematician, she’s better known for her contributions to the world of computing. If you’ve ever browsed the Internet, bought something online, or even used a smartphone, you owe her an immeasurable debt.

:::shaking head:::

Read the whole thing.
