Workshop Descriptions

iOS 8

This is the latest update to Apple’s mobile operating system. It presents a fresh look with new flatter-looking icons, a new clear font along with other updated user interface elements. These provide unified clarity and continuity throughout the operating system.

This workshop will give you an overall picture of how iOS 8 works and teach you how to get the most out of your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad. Discover how to interact with your iOS 8 devices including external controls, touch screen, “predictive” keyboard and Apple’s digital assistant, Siri. Also covered will be essential tasks, making and receiving calls, e-mailing, and browsing the Web with Safari. Learn how to extend the functionality of your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad by installing one of the 1+ million apps available in the Apple App Store. This workshop wraps up with some essential settings that will help you customize your device, protect your privacy, and troubleshoot your device(s) whenever you encounter a problem.

OS X Yosemite

Learn the essentials of Yosemite, Mac OS X 10.10, Apple’s latest operating system for Macintosh computers. In this workshop we will go over the core interface elements such as the Finder, menus and the Dock. You will learn how to customize your computer so it works the way you want it to, discover ways to secure your personal data, and find out how to troubleshoot common problems.

Who are you and what do you do?

At The Sweet Setup:

Every week we try to post a new interview with someone about what software they use on their Mac, iPhone, or iPad. We do these interviews because not only are they fun, but a glimpse into what tools someone uses and how they use those tools can spark our imagination and give us an idea or insight into how we can do things better.

Today’s victim, er, interviewee:

I’m Blake Cloutier, a fourth year Civil Engineering student at the University of British Columbia, and a Player Support Representative with Disney Interactive. I also work remotely for an animal supply company as their technical help. I love looking at something, figuring out how it works and how it could be improved.

A typical day for a Player Support Representative involves responding to guest’s emails, doing chat moderation, name approvals, and online engagement. In my time there I’ve started co-facilitating online engagement for our local and global offices. It’s been a great chance to hone my presentation, data management, and coaching skills before becoming an engineer.

You can catch Blake’s complete story here: Blake Cloutier’s Mac and iOS setup.

I’m Brian Hamilton, a film student living in Boston, MA. Thanks to Northeastern University’s co-op program, I’ve spent the last six months as the videographer for a local business school and will be returning to class come January. I also write film reviews, do freelance photography/videography work, and host a few podcasts: Garrulous, with Kyle Seth Gray, and The ADR Podcast, wherein I bring a guest on to discuss a movie. I blog occasionally, but most of my writing output is on Twitter.

7 awesome iPhone apps

Zach Epstein has a bad habit of posting lists of cool iPhone/iPad(/iPod Touch) apps that are temporarily free over on BGR.

Here’s the fine print:

These are paid iPhone and iPad apps that have been made available for free for a limited time by their developers. There is no way to tell how long they will be free. These sales could end an hour from now or a week from now – obviously, the only thing we can guarantee is that they were free at the time this post was written. If you click on a link and see a price listed next to an app instead of the word “get”, it is no longer free. The sale has ended. If you download the app, you will be charged.

Here’s the link to today’s apps:

I’m Virginia Roberts, also known as The Heartographer. I’m an online dating coach, which is a weird job I sort of made up after meeting my husband and helping some friends meet their spouses. I sometimes supplement my coaching business with writing, software testing, linguistic work, and event planning. I also seem to take on a few too many volunteer commitments, like helping produce John Roderick’s weekly live shows and helping organize and put on App Camp 4 Girls.

I also dabble with writing and podcasting – I blog at virginiaroberts.com, and I’m working on a short podcast arc to show a bit better what it’s like to work with me for online dating help. I think I’m about to be a sometimes guest on a sort of comedy show that starts next week, too.

Were You at the Meeting Last Night?

If not, you missed humor, tech we could all understand, and proof that the drawing ticket program can handle numbers over 9,999.

At Coco’s, discussions were quite varied: opera productions, unguessable passwords (the names of the Valkyrie), how many icons do you have on your Desktop?, sound mixing woes at the Super Bowl halftime show, and the vagaries of Hollywood “reality”.

That’s my story; I’m sticking to it!

My name is Marc and I’m an OS X and iOS software engineer in Portland, OR. I work on a lot of projects and side projects!

During the day I’m usually at the Esri PDX R&D Center creating tools to help developers use Esri’s geographic software and bring maps to mobile and the web. From time to time I also make apps for my indie software venture Downtown Software House. In the Portland tech scene I’m active in a few regular meetup groups. One that I help organize is Code for Portland, where we help connect coders to projects that matter in our community.
