Apple Product Design

In BloombergBusinessweek yesterday, Alex Webb posted a most interesting article on the good news/bad news of Jony Ive and Apple product design:

At one time, even broaching the idea would have been sacrilegious. But here goes: might Apple Inc.’s product design have improved since the departure of Jony Ive?

The Apple of today would not exist without Ive. He was the creative leviathan behind the look of the iMac, iPod, iPad and, most significantly, the iPhone. Apple’s design-led approach to product development was considered pioneering. But there was often a tension between form and function: whether a device’s appearance took precedence over its ease of use.

There was a sense that, without the moderating influence of the late Steve Jobs, perhaps Ive started to prioritize aesthetics a little too much. Since he stepped down as chief designer at the end of 2019, Apple seems to have reemphasized function. From the iPhone to Apple TV to the Macbook, gone are the days of “The user be damned, we think this looks cool. ”

Were You at the Meeting Last Night?

If not, you’re even further behind on computer/device security.

At the Meeting after the Meeting, Intel chip support, iOS options, “ownership” of external drives, photos of the moon, Zoom backgrounds, may God bless and keep the Czar…, iPhone 13 Pro camera, zapping the PRAM, resetting power management, broadcast TV in the modern era, tankers lined up in harbors, politics and moving, varieties of Mexican food, Apple vs Microsoft.

That’s my story; I’m sticking to it!

Who Are You and What Do You Do?

At The Sweet Setup:

In this series, we post a new interview with someone about what software they use on their Mac, iPhone, or iPad. We do these interviews because not only are they fun, but a glimpse into what tools someone uses and how they use those tools can spark our imagination and give us an idea or insight into how we can do things better.

Today’s victim, er, interviewee:

I’m Josh Ginter, a new CPA located in Morden, Manitoba, Canada. I’m also the managing editor here at The Sweet Setup. I have two beautiful, rambunctious little girls, a patient wife, and a busy work schedule requiring constant calendar organization.

I have long worked on Macs, iPads, and iPhones for The Sweet Setup, but I was only able to transition to a Mac at the accounting office in the last year or so. It has been a year of testing new workflows and software. I’ve settled on an Intel iMac setup (for now) that has actually improved my productivity over past PC setups.

You can catch Josh’s complete story here: Josh Ginter’s iMac Setup for Accounting.

“Back issues” can be found here: Sweet Setup Interviews.

Pasadena Library Update – Closure

From the City of Pasadena’s Web site:

CITY ANNOUNCES CLOSURE OF PASADENA CENTRAL LIBRARY DUE TO SEISMIC SAFETY ISSUES

On Monday, May 3, the City of Pasadena Building Official ordered the closure of Pasadena Central Library, located at 285 E. Walnut St, until further notice. View the order. In-person library services recently resumed on a part-time basis following the county’s move into the less-restrictive orange tier. However, a recent structural assessment conducted as part of the scope of work for the Central Library Building Systems and Structural Assessment Capital Improvement Project revealed that most of the building is comprised of unreinforced masonry (URM) bearing walls that support concrete floors and walls.

The Board had been hoping to be able to start public General Meetings soon, back at the library, but fortune does not seem to be smiling on that at the moment.

Never fear; we will be continuing our Zoom meetings. We are actively researching substitute/replacement locations, so we’ll be ready to open the doors as soon as we are able.

For the complete report on the library, PYBT on the link above.

Ransomware and Malware, Continued

In this day and age, you can’t be too safe.

You are about to enter another dimension. A dimension of psychology and software…

Ransomware, Malware, Phishing, and dangers of computing online…

Security of your System and data isn’t something you do once, it’s a way of thinking. We’ll present an overview of the key concerns and the key things you can do before and after to get and keep your systems and your data safe. To get you in the mood, here are three horror stories that might just keep you up at night…

User gets a text thinks it’s from their employer and sends their driver’s license front and back.

User enters their e-mail credentials in a phishing site and within 12 hours their ms365 account has been hacked and has sent over 300 additional Phishing messages.

User clicks on a link without due care and their computer and their company’s server becomes encrypted by Ransomware.

Next stop: the Security Zone…
